About Us

Virginia Trujillo

The County Treasurer is a Constitutional Officer, elected to a four-year term.

The Office of the Custer County Treasurer has responsibility for the collection, custody and distribution of county funds. The collection process consists of the preparation and dispatching of annual tax notices, including delinquent taxes, for all real estate in Custer County.

The Treasurer holds an annual tax lien sale in an effort to gather outstanding tax monies which are due.

The Treasurer's Office is the official source for all Certificates of Taxes Due. Once tax funds have been collected, the Treasurer's Office distributes monies to the various entities for whom taxes are collected, including school districts within the County.

The Treasurer invests County funds with the direct goal of receiving a maximum return rate, while maintaining integrity and safety. The Treasurer's Office serves as a general collection agency for all County Departments and is responsible for maintaining the records and payments for all Custer County Warrants issued.

The Treasurer's Office adheres to all requirements of the Colorado Revised Statutes and is responsible for administering all new laws relating to these Statutes.

The Custer County Treasurer's Office is open from 8am to 4pm, Monday - Friday

Important Tax Lien Information

May 8, 2024

Hello:
As investors and/or community members interested in the Custer County tax lien sale, you may be aware
of changes coming to the Treasurer’s Deed process and we wanted to reach out and provide some
information. A new law is to go into effect on July 1, 2024, which will change how Treasurer’s Deeds are
issued. Any applications currently in process that will be deeded before July 1 will not be impacted by
these changes, and all new applications are on hold until the effective date. Going forward, deeds will not
be automatically issued to the lien holder, instead the option for Treasurer’s Deed will be sold at a public
auction to the highest bidder. The opening bid includes the cost of the tax lien combined with treasurer’s
fees and costs, such as the application deposit. Tax lien premium bids are not included in the auction
opening bid as they are not part of the tax lien principal. This auction provides an opportunity for the
property to be sold for a fair market value as determined by bidding. Upon completion of the auction, the
lien holder will still have the option to redeem for the auction purchase price if they would like to take
ownership of the property. Taking into account increases in postage fees and other expenses, we are also
increasing our application deposit for the real estate treasurer’s deed process to $1,000. Please feel free
to contact our office with any questions. We will do our best to assist you as we implement this new
process in Custer County. (PDF)
