Stage I Fire Restrictions Now in Effect
After consultation with the Wet Mountain Fire Protection District Fire Chief, the National Weather Service and a thorough review of current fire danger conditions, along with the possibility of a red flag warning tomorrow, Sheriff and Fire Warden Rich Smith has implemented Stage I Fire Restrictions for Custer County, effective immediately on January 15, 2026.

Custer County Invites Public to Participate in Community Wildfire Protection Plan Meetings
Custer County residents, property owners, and stakeholders are invited to attend upcoming community meetings focused on the Custer County Community Wildfire Protection Plan (CWPP). These meetings provide an opportunity to learn about wildfire risk in the County, review proposed mitigation strategies, and share local knowledge, concerns, and priorities.

CDC Reports High Levels of Acute Respiratory Illness in Colorado
According to the CDC, as of January 3, 2025, the amount of acute respiratory illness (Influenza A, COVID-19 and RSV) causing people to seek healthcare is at a high level in Colorado and across the nation and is predicted to increase.

Custer County Veterans Service Office Update
The Custer County Board of County Commissioners (BOCC) is working with the Regional Veterans Service Office (VSO) Officer to work through the job duties and responsibilities for the next Custer County VSO Officer. While the BOCC works through the hiring process for this position, Veterans of Custer County will be able to utilize the services of the VSO by meeting with Eric Moncibais (Regional VSO Officer).

Custer County Launches Economic Development Strategic Plan – Public Input Needed
Custer County has secured a Colorado Department of Local Affairs (DOLA) grant and is now ready and
able to update its Economic Development Strategic Plan for Custer County. The Board of County
Commissioners and the Custer County Economic Development Corporation are kicking off a three-
month period of time for the citizens of Custer County to participate in the process of developing a
comprehensive plan for the county.
