Custer County invites the Public to Participate in Community Wildfire Protection Plan Meetings

Custer County residents, property owners, and stakeholders are invited to attend upcoming community meetings focused on the Custer County Community Wildfire Protection Plan (CWPP). These meetings provide an opportunity to learn about wildfire risk in the County, review proposed mitigation strategies, and share local knowledge, concerns, and priorities to help guide future wildfire preparedness and resilience efforts.

Custer County Emergency Management is looking for public review and feedback on the nearly completed Community Wildfire Protection Plan. Please visit https://www.custercounty-co.gov/ and review each document linked. (documents to be posted online for review on Jan. 8, 2026.)

To facilitate collaborative discussion and advance CWPP planning efforts, two meeting options are available to encourage broad participation:

The Custer County Community Wildfire Protection Plan (CWPP) identifies wildfire risks and provides strategies to reduce those risks and improve preparedness. It outlines mitigation actions to help residents and visitors live safely with wildfire, recognizing that fire is a natural and inevitable part of many landscapes. The plan emphasizes adapting how people build, live, and manage land to coexist with fire rather than attempting to eliminate it. In many cases, wildfires also play a beneficial role in maintaining healthy ecosystems.

Community input is a critical component of the CWPP, which helps identify priority actions to reduce wildfire risk, improve public safety, and strengthen community resilience.
