CDC Reports High Levels of Acute Respiratory Illness in Colorado

Posted on January 15, 2025

Press Release

January 15, 2025

According to the CDC, as of January 3, 2025, the amount of acute respiratory illness, (Influenza A, Covid 19 and RSV) causing people to seek healthcare is at a high level in Colorado and across the nation and is predicted to increase.

The Avian Flu, (H5N1), continues to cause disease in animals and humans. Nationally, in 2024, 66 people became ill with the avian flu and one person died. The risk to the general public is very low. However, those who work with or have other exposure to infected animals and birds remain at higher risk. Currently, no commercial dairies or poultry facilities in Colorado are affected. Wild birds and animals and some sporadic backyard flocks continue to test positive.

The best way to protect yourself is through vaccination. Wearing masks when in crowded places such as airports and social distancing may offer protection, especially for those who are immunocompromised or very young. Good hand washing and use of hand sanitizers that contain at least 60% alcohol help reduce the spread of infection.

It is not too late to get vaccinated. Please call the Custer County Public Health Agency (719-783-3369) to obtain vaccinations and/or masks. Covid tests kits for in-home use are available free of charge through https://www.usa.gov/covid-tests-vaccinations.
