Services & Responsibilities
The Clerk & Recorder's Office provides a diverse array of services to Custer County residents, from motor vehicle registration to elections administration and recording of vital documents.
Vehicle Services
Motor Vehicles
Processing vehicle titles, registrations, and renewals as the authorized agent for the Colorado Department of Revenue. Provides services for cars, truckts, motorcycles, trailers, and off-highway vehicles.
Vital Records
Marriage Licenses
Issuing and recording all marriage licenses allowed by law. The Clerk & Recorder maintains permanent records of all marriages performed in Custer County.
Voting & Elections
Elections
Serving as Chief Election Official for the county. Administering voter registration, conducting elections, providing sample ballots, and operating the Voter Service & Polling Center.
Public Records
Recording & Filing
Recording real estate titles, deeds, easements, judgments, federal tax liens, certificates of incorporation, and various other legal documents. Maintaining official county records.
Veteran Services
Military Records
Recording DD214 service discharge papers for military personnel free ofd charge. Copies available only to the veteran or next of kin with proper authorization and identification.
County Administration
BOCC Administration
Recording all official actions and minutes of the Board of County Commissioners. Processing liquor licenses for unincorporated Custer County. Maintaining county budgets and expenditures.
About Our Clerk & Recorder
The County Clerk and Recorder is a Constitutional Officer, elected to a four-year term.
The Clerk and Recorder is the ex-officio recorder of deeds, Clerk to the Board of County Commissioners, the authorized agent for the State Department of Revenue and is charged with the responsibility of carrying out the state laws relating to motor vehicles, certification of automobile titles and motor vehicle registrations and the Chief Elections Officer for the county. Custer County's records date back to 1877.
The Clerk has on record real estate titles, deeds of general assignments, easements, judgments, decrees, federal tax liens, certificates of incorporation, inheritance tax liens and various other documents.
The County Clerk issues and records all marriage licenses allowed by law.
According to the State Constitution, the Clerk and Recorder is officially responsible for recording all official actions and minutes of the Board of County Commissioners. The Clerk and Recorder is responsible for processing all liquor licenses that are issued by the Board of County Commissioners for the establishments located in unincorporated Custer County. The Clerk and Recorder records all special meetings, the Board of Equalization meetings, and the meetings for the Board of County Commissioners. County budgets, county warrants, county expenditures and Board of Equalization meeting records are kept by the Clerk to the Board.
The Clerk records all DD214 service discharge papers for military personal free of charge. A written request form and a picture I.D. must now accompany all requests for copies of DD214's. Copies will only be distributed to the veteran listed or to their next of kin. Lawyers, doctors, historians, etc. may request copies of a DD214 with a signed authorization form from the veteran or next of kin.
